I think I have the code changes sorted out, the patch also had conflicts with a previously-merged patch for DS-1503 / Pull Request #196. I will re-test and make a PR. In configuring the ShibbolethAuthentication against the University of Cambridge IdP using mod_shib I discovered multiple issues with NPEs. FindBugs identified some further errors. These always showed up as Authentication Failed in the Browser.
