The last update here dates from back in 2011, quite sure that this is not critical right now. The intermediate SOLR 3 and SOLR 4 updates have improved performance as well. Marking minor for now.

We have found that enabling the StatisticsLoggingConsumer to keep statistics data up-to-date after item changes (metadata edit or collection moving/mapping) the item update operations become slowly and the system unusable.
