I feel that that exception should not have leaked out of the EventService. What exactly did it say? Is there a way to reproduce the exception?
You are right that the UIs should not blow up like that, but just catching the exception is probably masking deeper problems. We probably should have this patch as well as another Issue with details for debugging the underlying problem, if you can supply them.
