Allen is correct; this is how I enter most documents. I've been using an Excel
document with macros that export to XML, that was graciously provided by Tom
McGhee at Seton Hall. I can forward this to you directly if you are interested.

More information about batch import available from:

The DSpace Course - look for "import and export" -

We are using DSpace 1.5.2, XMLUI (Manakin) and the batch import works pretty
well for us. By the way, The DSpace Course assumes you are using Linux; we are
using Windows and discovered the commands needed to be slightly altered to fit
the Windows programming format... so just a heads up if you're not on Linux.

Hope this helps!

Greetings!

This is my first post to this list. We have recently purchased a large storage
server to run DSpace on. The idea is to make our collection of historical
court archives available to the world. Right now, everything is scanned with
metadata in tab-delimited text files. Can anyone suggest the best way to enter
a LOT of items quickly with metadata?

Thanks!

Hi Keith,

The best way is to batch import, using the shell script command "import"
in dspace/bin.
Details see the dspace manual.

Now your metadata is in tsv. You need some programming effort to
transform them into dublin_core.xml.
There are existing converters for creating the xml files. They may or
may not suit your special needs. Sometimes writing your own converter is
faster than search-and-test for existing programs.

Best,
Allen Lam.
