DSpace treats each bitstream as a self-contained whole, though it may
be related to other bitstreams within an item.  If you split up
something like a book into page or chapter bitstreams, I think users
will dislike the result.

What DSpace tries to do is to make well-described objects easy to find
and retrieve, and stay out of the way of products which are focused on
interpreting those objects to the user.  To that end, we might be able
to do better at ingesting and indexing very large objects.
