I have two common workflows when I add items to DSpace.

If I have several items to add at one time, my graduate assistants and I will
add all the metadata to one Excel spreadsheet. I then export that spreadsheet
(thanks to a macro) so that the information is in the format DSpace requires,
and save all of these files to a shared drive. I then let my programmer know
the files are ready for batch import.

If I only have a few items to add, I just use the form embedded in DSpace, and
usually do not use any of the workflow steps. Sometimes I'll add myself to the
workflow, just so I have a chance to check my work before the item record goes
live.

We are on DSpace 1.5.2.

What are others doing? I'm curious to know if others use the embedded form.

Subject: [Dspace-general] online forum introduction: workflows in DSpace

Welcome to our second DSpace online discussion, where we will talk about our
workflows in DSpace.

This discussion will take place today and tomorrow. It will end at 6 p.m.
Eastern Standard Time tomorrow evening. After the discussion, I will provide a
summary of what was discussed.

I expect the discussion will branch into other topics. This is encouraged!
Please feel free to respond to any part of the discussion that interests you.

To start the discussion:

1. Describe your most commonly-used workflow for ingesting items into DSpace.
2. Describe what might improve your workflow.
3. State who you are and the version of DSpace you are running.

Don't be shy – the purpose is to learn from one another and get ideas for our
own institutions.
