An easy way to get numbers on this is to check your Google Analytics usage.
Keep in mind we are only using the basic tracker (requires client-side
javascript) so it isn't counting bitstream downloads, but we've got numbers
that look like this. Showing that tablet/mobile is a sizable chunk of our
users. And they're growing fast year over year. This is also for one of our
non-mobile-friendly sites. So yes, all new instances should use a mobile
friendly theme, and existing instances should consider moving to a mobile
friendly theme when they get the opportunity.
