I've been trying to alter that area of the navigation menu as well, but
have had little success. I too believe it can be done via navigation.xsl,
but don't know xsl/dri well enough to do it.
You could alternatively remove it with Javascript. That is that route I've
gone to make the modifications I needed to make.
Just add this right before your closing footer tag in page_structure.xsl:
