Hello Carolyn, If you withdraw an item in the status tab instead of deleting it, the tombstone should be displayed automatically when you go to the item page when not logged in as an admin. The item won't be available via search after withdrawn, but if you enter the url of the item you will see a simple note that it has been withdrawn.
