Hi Robin, When it comes to Linux/Unix Sun's provided installation of Java has always failed to meet the LSB standard. What vendors provide is better integration of java into the existing platform. This is the direction Java is going in by becoming Open Source, it allows the vendors to better deliver Java as a serious and well integrated tool under the GNU/Lunix business model (not dissimilar to to Apache httpd, the GNU software stack, etc. You give Sun way to much credit, they've totally lagged on supporting Java on Linux. Linux vendors no much better how to package a Java distro for their platform than Sun ever has.
http://www.linux-foundation.org/en/LsbJava Linux and its available software stack matures by adoption, what is popular but not standard evolves to become vendor supported and maintained in a vendor stack, vendors drive it to become more standardized, I speculate this has happened with GNU tools, Apache HTTPD, PERL, etc. A vendor providing a distro just means more eyes have reviewed the configuration and more issues have been resolved and more stability has been introduced before it gets on my server. Great feedback.
