Hi,

Background - We currently only have eTheses in our repository, and the
eTheses collections were set up to collect author data in the metadata
element "contributor.author". We are about to expand into ePrints, and
our metadata folks have given me a schema to implement which puts the
ePrint author information into "creator.author".

Problem - On the Browse screens, I have the contents of the Author
column currently configured to display "contributor.author", which is
fine when eTheses are being listed, but when an ePrint is listed, the
Author column is empty (because the author information is in
"creator.author").

Question 1 - Is it possible to configure the Browse screens to display
both "creator.author" and "contributor.author" in a single column?

If not (and from my investigation it would appear not), then the next
option seems to be to settle on just one metadata element to hold author
details for both item types - my metadata colleagues are fairly adamant
that they want to use "creator.author" for ePrint authors, so that
brings me to considering using "creator.author" for eTheses . . . .

More questions -

- Is there a way to retrospectively change the author details for our
existing eTheses from being in "contributor.author" to being in
"creator.author"?
- I'm guessing the answer to that question is yes but it probably
involves hacking the database - if so, any SQL gurus out there familiar
with the DSpace DB schema who could provide me with appropriate SQL (or
at the very least a few pointers)? I'm neither an SQL guru nor am I
closely acquainted with the DB schema!

Finally, is there any reason why I shouldn't even consider
retrospectively changing the author data from being in
"contributor.author" to "creator.author"? Or perhaps any good arguments
to take back to my metadata colleagues to get them to accept
"contributor.author" for ePrint author metadata?

We are running DSpace v1.4.1 with postgres.

Any thoughts, suggestions, or advice relating to this conundrum is
welcome!

Cheers,

Mike
