Thanks Stuart, I ended up writing a php script to connect to the ldap server from our dspace server. Worked.
Long story short. There were about 3 changes going on at the same time. The only one I had control over was a stupid error on my part - through the course of the past few weeks, the config file was clobbered (only on 1 line) and one letter was changed in the ldap object context. I guess no one noticed as there are only 3 people testing; I was able to log in, but no one else was. Alas. Thanks for the tool tip - We use softerra on windows, but I don't have anything loaded on linux.
