Hello all,

It's been a long time coming, but I've finally received approval to
release the code behind my poster from Open Repositories 2007 entitled
"Format Conversion in DSpace using OpenOffice.org":

OR2007 poster - http://hdl.handle.net/2142/209

For those who haven't heard of this:
I've created a new OpenOffice.org Media Filter for DSpace, which uses
some basic "wrapper" code I built around the OpenOffice.org API to
perform automated format conversions of content within DSpace.

(Note: the basic "wrapper" code which I'm calling the "OpenOffice.org
Converter" is not even reliant on DSpace. It can be used standalone or
even be integrated with another repository software)

At a basic level it allows you to automatically convert
FROM:
  - Word, Powerpoint, Excel
  - OpenOffice.org formats

TO:
  - OpenOffice.org formats
  - PDF
  - Comma Separated Values (CSV)
  - Rich Text Format (RTF)
  - Plain Text
  - DocBook XML
  etc..

Currently, this code is being released under the University of
Illinois/NCSA Open Source license
(http://www.opensource.org/licenses/UoI-NCSA.php). It is released
as-is, and I cannot promise support. (But, I will attempt to help you
out with major problems, time-permitting.)

My hope is that in the future some or all of this code can be
distributed within DSpace software (or at the very least, alongside
DSpace as an official "add-on"). However, this idea must first obtain
approval amongst the other DSpace Committers :)

Currently, I will admit, the installation takes a *little bit* of
technical know-how. Especially, since it requires the installation of
an existing DSpace patch (SF# 1589429):

http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=1589429&group_id=19984&atid=319984

In any case, the full installation instructions, along with code
downloads are now freely accessible from our IDEALS Wiki at:

https://www.ideals.uiuc.edu/wiki/bin/view/IDEALS/OpenOfficeConvert

I believe everything is now fully documented up there and relatively
straightforward! But, if you run into anything confusing or that
doesn't work, please send me an email, and I'll try to get it fixed as
soon as I can!

Have fun!

- Tim
