Looks like the FeedServlet (in 1.4.2) uses org.dspace.search.Harvest to actually grab the Items. If there are no entries in the communities2item table, it should return an empty LinkedList (which should cause no problems for the Community with no Collections). As for the Community with 40k Items, this could potentially be causing problems if the FeedServlet tries to read them all into memory (not full Items, but HarvestedItemInfo objects which are much more lightweight, but could still cause problems).
