I don't think it's a problem. I am building DSpace just fine using java 1.6.0_11. I do think there is a problem using tomcat5.5 on unix though. It was giving loads of security policy violations until I moved to tomcat6. Tomcat5.5 works fine with DSpace on Windoze though.

No, it will work on 1.6, maven will compile with 1.5 as its target and the JVM will downgrade the runtime to that version when executing.
