The media filter mechanism could be used to create tiled images automatically
if that is the limiting factor?

I have also been looking for a flash/JavaScript image loader that allows zoom.
We use Zoomify on our other sites, but it needs to create a bunch of tiled
images in order to work. I am not sure that would be the best fit for dspace.
