One difference is that Postgres or Oracle are a "requirement" for running a DSpace 1.x server while FilterMedia plugins such as XPDF are optional "plugins" for DSpace that provide added capability. If a plugin requires more dependencies than are required or delivered by a default DSpace installation, it probably shouldn't be enabled by default.
Please do take this the wrong way. Someone writing DSpace centric XPDF installation instructions for various platforms is a nice contribution to the community. There are already adequate docs to get folks started with this (thanks to your efforts). I also think XPDF is significantly better than PDFBox and I'm grateful that you've created the MediaFilter for it. My point is that we don't create installers that include Postgres or Oracle packaged for various OS. That would be a rather large inordinate waste of community resources. Its upto those installing DSpace it to choose their platform and configuration, and with this community, that's the expectation. You can install an XPDF distribution appropriate for your platform and configure the MediaFilter fairly easily in DSpace 1.5.2, and that seems to be just what we needed.
