You are correct that I'm referring to the Live CD below.
I have a tried this on my PC and the network was ready and I was able to get to
the internet.
But on another PC the network connection was not detected. She is using a new
Dell E6500 laptop and we wonder if the unbuntu does not know the network
driver. What are your thoughts?

What sort of driver do you need? On most machines the live CD 'just works' and
connects to the network etc.
