You also have some options in dspace.cfg as to how you want to keep these numbers updated -- realtime or in a nightly cron. We choose the nightly cron to minimize online overhead. So what happens is that any Items that are added to (or deleted from) DSpace are not reflected in the Community/Collection counts until the following day.
