*I* no longer do exactly as I wrote: not only was that for 1.5.x, but I now keep my /dspace directory owned by the tomcat user to avoid having to do chown all the tomcat directories. I'd highly recommend that you start again, and this time rather follow the installation documentation than the lunatic advice you might find in the list archives!
