Gary, We install a copy of the *Sun JDK downloaded from Sun's website in the /opt file system. We manually upgrade that installation when a security advisory is issued that effects us (rather than using RPMs). We use that copy of the Sun JDK installed in /opt to run our DSpace instances. We use it to run Tomcat. But, we leave the RHEL base Java (a.k.a. Blackdown/GNU) installed on the system as well. We do not install the RHEL Sun Java packages. Usually, we're using the latest version. Currently, we are running our DSpace instances with Java 1.6. We haven't had any problems. There are a number of HOWTO's and lots of documentation on the web, that Google can uncover for you, on how to integrate this kind of non-RPM installation with RedHat's "alternatives" system (should you want to). * Oracle. - VAB - V.
