For a small community, I'm hoping to be able to use XMLUI to provide some
global navigation for 'by subject' browsing, complete with the output of a
dozen or so high-level subjects and a count of the number of items within
that subject:

e.g.

Browse By Subject:
- Subject 1 (2)
- Subject 2 (8)
- Subject 3 (12)
etc.

Clicking on one of the subject names would take the user to the
corresponding canned search:

.../xmlui/browse?value=Subject+1&type=subject

It would appear that some custom XSL would be required to output the
following markup:

<h3>Browse By Subject:</h3>
<ul>
  <li><a href="/xmlui/browse?value=Subject+1&type=subject">Subject 1
(2)</a></li>
  <li><a href="/xmlui/browse?value=Subject+2&type=subject">Subject 2
(8)</a></li>
  <li><a href="/xmlui/browse?value=Subject+3&type=subject">Subject 3
(12)</a></li>
  ...
</ul>

Keeping in mind that this would be global for a given community (querying
all subjects from all items for all collections in a community), is this
even feasible? If so, where would I begin (not having the item count would
be acceptable)?
