You can do batch imports through the command line, however you'll need to
first package your material. The metadata-import tool can't import files.

I worked on a tool (Java) to facilitate this process:
https://github.com/peterdietz/SAFBuilder
It will take a csv with properly formatted metadata, and files in a
directory that you specify in the csv, and build a package suitable for
batch importing into DSpace via the command line ItemImport.
