That's probably because the code that's trying to parse this as a date
encounters an error and the error isn't handled terribly well. You may
be able to see an error message in the dspace.log file; if you spot
anything that looks relevant and can post it to the list then you may
have a better chance for someone to provide a patch for this.

You could export the metadata for the items' collection, fix the dates
and then re-import the metadata.

In the long run it would probably be good if the metadata importer did a
check that the date values can be parsed -- though that raises the issue
of telling DSpace which metadata fields are date fields...
