Hi Paul,

You may want to look at the DSpace Logs to see whether any errors are 
being reported.  See this wiki page for hints/tips on troubleshooting an 
error:

DSpace 1.7.x should work on any web browser.  For instance, you should 
be able to login from any browser on our DSpace Demo Server at:

http://demo.dspace.org/xmlui/

(Login information for that site is available in the header paragraph on 
that main page)
