That sounds strange. Discovery was merged only in DSpace in 1.7, so if you're using it with 1.6, it must be an out-of-tree patch. I don't want to install an older version with an unsupported patch to investigate this. I recommend you upgrade to 1.7, or preferably to 1.8 (Discovery was much improved between these versions).
