Thank you helix84, that did point me in the right direction, I think. I reduced tomcat's memory from 2048 to 1024 (in /etc/defaults/tomcat6) and I've managed to submit 4 items without a crash. (I also tried switching between openjdk and sun, but that made no difference.) It's probably too early to celebrate, but a good time to put the champagne on ice! Thank you!
