Hi, I did change in the db and an index-discovery-update -f, but the the item is still displaying in Browse by Author. I tried several other indexing options but it never disappears. Is there a cache I need to clear too ? If I make it private via dspace itself it disappears from the Browse by pages immediately.

If you don't mind getting your hands dirty, change the "discoverable" attribute in the "item" table to false for all items you want to hide, then run "update-discovery-index -f". I haven't tested it but that's how it should work. Don't forget to backup your DB before doing any changes and try this on a testing instance first.
