Oh, right, that was your original question. I only answered how to make a set of items private. AFAIK, the browse indices still come from Lucene (the one maintained using index-init and index-update), not Solr (update-discovery-index). This was supposed to change in 3.0, but the change didn't make it in time. It's fairly certain that the change will be in 4.0.
