Some suggestions

Logs may help. The intermittent nature of connection might mean you have
multiple machine with the same IP as your server on the network. Make
sure the hosts file and DNS entries are  correct. Play around with the
nslookup command 

Try changing your Server's IP or get your sysadmin to see if there are
rogue machine son the net.
