Dear Anthony, 

what you request, is not possible in DSpace. DSpace uses its own assetstore and 
stores files in its own structure/hierarchy, thus you are not able to maintain 
your original structure.

I guess, this is to ensure that for very large repositories with thousand of 
items and files, the retrieval of the files is somehow optimised.
