It does appear that using a <meta> tag to do a refresh within a specific sub-theme works properly. So we'll probably withdraw all the content (so it doesn't show up in searches) and alter the theme to do the redirect. I think that'll work fine for our needs.

An interesting question and I don't know the answer. meta refresh is kind of icky, unless you need to interpose one of those "sit here forever and eventually your browser will show you what you asked for" pages. But I think that a theme could include a transformer that changes the response to an HTTP Redirect. I'd be surprised if there isn't one already, but if not, it should be simple to write.
