I've built the dspam package from debian testing (which is also used for building in backports I presume) on my server now. Had to install debhelper from backports. If anybody has suggestions for debug statements that could be inserted somewhere, I might be able to try them out. To recap, the problem is that --user argument to the dspam binary ends up mangled when dspam delivers back through smtp to postfix. Like so, turning "firmapost" into "??D?n" :
