So to answer your original question, No there is no way to test DSpam with an EICAR like test message.

The confusion was either with Tony thinking I wanted to incorporate basic signature scanning for viruses into dspam, or me thinking that's what he thought, which lead to me explaining in more detail what I was originally asking. By that point the fact that it could not be done due to dspam's architecture had been stated (which answered my original question).

If it were trivial to implement a simple GTUBE test (separately from normal scanning, probably disabled by default in the prefs file) that aided configuration tests I still think that would be useful, but it sounds like its use would only be limited to my personal case :-) I might look at whether I can work out a quick patch for my own private use if I get a moment to think about it, but for the time being integrating clamav with dspam and testing with EICAR is usually close enough for what I need.
