My 2 cents on the whole RPM debate and the "proper" way to build things.
Instead of arguing about what the perfect RPM spec is here for
Fedora/RHEL/CentOS/etc, why don't one (or both perhaps as
co-maintainers) of your (Tonni/Steve) submit dspam to the Fedora
project where it will get proper review and give the opportunity to
make it even easier to get dspam installed on a wide user base?
This is probably a very good idea; or preferably Dag or Dries, since the
latter are the primary maintainers of the main MTA accoutrements
(amavisd-new, ClamAV etc.).
I'll see what Steve thinks about it.
I would also volunteer to be a co-maintainer if it would be helpful,
just keep in mind that I don't have a lot of time for this stuff.
Who is "Dave Rees"? Would you be "David Rees" <drees greenhydrant com>?
He's the only relevant one I can find by Googleing.
PS - Tonni, please try to keep your posts objective and stop bashing
Steve and his hard work. Sure, he is focused on the Gentoo aspect of
things, but saying things like "I can't honestly see what
non-descriptive Gentoo patches can possibly do for (me)" is completely
off base. Even though I am a Fedora/CentOS user myself, it is quite
clear to me that Steve's patches address problems which affect the
entire user-base. Any issues which may arise from using code from CVS
where a good number of his patches have been applied is simply an
artifact of the fact that the code in CVS is under development and may
have bugs!
All I know is, that when I run pure Jonz code (and bake and install an
rpm of it on FC6 or RHEL5) my systems run stably, for weeks. And when I
run Gentoo-patched code my systems croak. And if *anyone* proclaiming
himself the oracle tries to push stuff down my throat that mucks up my
systems I react (yes, sometimes violently).
Best,
