It's just context... "Subscriber" is used for a lot of pay services and a common way to speak about cell phone service. But, we're also all "Subscribers" to this mailing list, and we don't pay for it... My brain went right over it... didn't even see it. I doubt the original poster meant to sound like he was discussing a commercial service. It's just a common way to describe a "node" in digital radio systems these days, to say "subscriber radio"... I've even heard Public Safety folks use the term when talking about completely closed systems that way... and they don't really take "subscriptions" in the commercial sense, either.
