Shane et al. I spoke to the Icom Tech Reps at the Orlando HamCation this past weekend and asked about this issue. I told them it was a hassle to do testing on the 1.2 modules (had to drag a ID-1, antenna and power supply to the site). I asked why they made, in the past, the IC-T81A quad bander for FM but not a Tribander with D-Star. Also, I asked about an IC 910 type radio with D-Star.
They told me there were no models on the horizon with these features. We'll have to wait and see. I'm sure it is technically possible as the IC-T81A is about the same size as the IC-91/92. The IC 910H is a 2M/70CM radio up gradable to 23CM with a Module for 1.2GHz. Costs are comparable ID-1 and a IC-2820 with UT123 module for a little under $ 1789 (current HRO prices) vs an IC-910 H + UX910 module (for 1.2) = $ 1920 - still need a D-Stare module of some sort - say an UT 118 or UT 121 for $180 = total of $2100. For $ $310 +/- a few bucks you get all mode capability for the 3 bands. I for one would go for the 910H with its higher power and all mode capability. My guess is they have a warehouse full of ID-1s they need to sell first. Oh well one can dream.
