Well at least Alinco, Icom, and Yaesu had compatible microphone/ 
speaker jacks until they went to the "super jacks" and water proof  
jacks.  Kenwood always seemed to think they could do it "better" (at  
least locking in an accessory market).

I think the whole water proof thing is driven by two secondary markets:

1) 3rd world military, para-military, and police who buy the same  
radios we do at a price cheaper than US commercial rigs.
2) Emcomm groups who can't conceive of another way to keep their  
radios dry in a hurricane

The rest of us, keep 'em dry, even if it means popping them in a  
plastic bag during a hurricane.  Though I would probably take my VX-7  
on a fishing trip before my 91AD, just in case.
