I'm a D-Star noob as well. I bought an ID-880H on Friday afternoon. I had it
running in "prototype" mode in the shack well enough to have a conversation
with some of the Connecticut D-Star folks to give me some pointers. It was
(mostly) installed and running in the car on Saturday evening (I still have to
get a suitable remote speaker). It's not "rocket science," but it is different
than running on your standard FM repeater. The D-Star Calculator on
www.dstarinfo.com was helpful for understanding the settings. Also the
information on www.dstarusers.org was useful for figuring out whether I was
getting into the system.

In other words, I think if you're willing to do your homework, it's not really
that hard to get up and running effectively, and the D-Star community, at least
in my local area, has been one of the more helpful ham communities I've
encountered.
