Hi all,

After a very long silence I would like to share with you that I
succeeded in running MS Office 2000 including Outlook (Lookout!)
connected to exchange on Knoppix using:

1. A PC with PIV CPU and 1GB RAM, 0GB HD
2. Yes 0GB (zero GB) Hard disk, it's out of order completely
3. DVD ROM with Knoppix 4 CD inside
4. Network card connected to our Linux server (Yes I did it at last,
they're convinced!)

Why I did this?

Because I was fed up with my slow PIII with Mandrake 2005LE on it, so I
got myself an out of order PC from one of our classrooms and put it in
order with Knoppix Linux, I was merely wanting to use VNC to check my
email with Outlook on MDK, VNC was slow also, so I tried ssh and fired
up Outlook from there and you know what? It showed on my Knoppix desktop
running even faster than when it was on MDK.

I discovered that it is possible to run an inferior Linux server with MS
Office on it, and access the it via a superior Knoppix client and get it
run at native speeds!

Now my MDK '05LE is serving ExecuTrain (a Microsoft partner) with MySQL,
Squid, Apache and Samba. Nobody noticed a difference and in many cases
specially with Squid proxy, their web experience improved in terms of speed.

I am now the only lucky one with a PIV (all the other PIVs are in the
classrooms) with a full fledged desktop and connected to Exchange.

Before anyone tells me about using Evolution with the connector, I would
like to point out that our Exchange is version 5.5 with no POP3 and no
web access due to policies so it wont work, and for security reasons
file sharing is done via NWLinkIPX and not TCP/IP, my server is the only
one serving files (Samba) via TCP/IP.

So there you have it, Knoppix with MS Outlook 2000 running happily and
at native speeds.

Now bring in the lions...

8^)
