I'm trying to learn more about network programming. I want access to
a remote *nix box on the Internet that will allow me to experiment
with my own small server applications. (I need to bind a non-standard
port, and have inbound/outbound connections flow through any firewalls.)
I've done a whole lot of googling, but I still don't know what kind of
accounts (shell, web hosting, etc) will allow me to do this. Most of
them just specify which existing services they will allow (IRC bots,
mail redirection, etc). I'm confused about how they even control this...
Is anybody doing this, or do you know which accounts will allow it?
If I'm out in left-field with this question, could you please set me
straight?
