Unfortunately I'm afraid there will be some tweaking required most of
the time. Even after all those years you still cannot expect Linux to
support everything out of the box. However, I've recently checked out
Ubuntu and I must say I am really impressed with the progress this
distribution has made. When I booted the live cd on my laptop (which
is an HP Compaq nx6110), everything was working fine.

The base OS on my laptop is Gentoo Linux. And I've managed to get
everything working. Wireless, Direct Rendering (1100 fps on my Intel
i915), usb (2.0), bluetooth (through a dongle), uname -it...

It did involve some tweaking and tuning, but the knowledge base for
Gentoo is huge. If you're looking to get something working in Linux,
there's a 90% chance that the Gentoo knowledge base has a howto on it.

Anyway, many distributions have made huge efforts to support
everything out of the box. As I said, Ubuntu seemed to be doing a good
job.

On the other hand, don't focus on distributions to much. Linux is
linux, no matter what package it is wrapped in. An often misconception
I notice is that people go like "Gee, my wifi isn't working in SuSE,
let me give Red Hat a try". This doesn't really make much sense. Ok,
the Red Hat distribution may have a different configuration, different
kernel or something, but there is NO reason it would work in Red Hat
and not in SuSE. Linux is linux, either your hardware is supported or
it isn't. So whatever the distribution, if you don't get something to
work, just try harder! And ask our good friend Mr. Google ;)

My two cents,

Michael
