Do what I do then.. grab a knoppix live CD or Ubuntu live cd and head off to
Al-Ain Plaza :)
Pop it in and run it up.. see what is detected and what is not.. do your
dmesg/lspci dumps to a usb
keystick and go home to investigate all the hardware.. see what is supported on
your chosen model
and what is not..

I've got a Sony Vaio VGN-TX27GP and have problems with the multimedia keys and
inbuilt SD reader..
everything else works out of the box with Ubuntu 6.06.. it's sweet :)
I can live with the volume buttons/multimedia keys not working.. (I'm working
on that though) and
the SD reader is a "nice to have". Someone has it working, but you have to
unload the sound card
drivers to be able to use it.. so I just use my USB one for now like I always
have.. I'm sure it
will be fixed in the not too distant future, and if I was desperate I could
always use a PCMCIA unit
as that hides away in the side of the laptop in any case..

I've not got suspend-to-ram working yet... (which is black magic on linux at
the moment anyway), but
suspend2 to hibernate to disk works a treat..

There is never likely to be region free firmware for my DVD drive.. but I can
live with that using
xine and vobcopy with libdvdcss2.

Oh, and if the store won't let you run up a live-cd.. then find somewhere else
to buy from..
The other thing to do is find out what you actually want in a laptop, then find
a number of models
that will fulfil those requirements.. then google..

Mine was a tough one.. I wanted the lightest laptop on the market.. so it
narrowed it down to a
choice of one I'm afraid.. I was just lucky that most of it worked out of the
box.. and I had a
friends unit to trial for 2 weeks before I made the decision, so I could really
try it out..
