I must admit I'm a violent forum objector.. I use mailing lists exclusively and
do a lot of my
reading and reply writing off line on planes or in dodgy hotels.. if it moves
to a forum I'm out :)

Probably the best of both worlds is what we do with PLUG. We use a standard
mailing list like
mailman, with an NNTP gateway (replicating on port 1199 for me who is often
NNTP challenged) and a
full web archive including address munging for good googleability.

This does however entail a dedicated server..
What we do is keep the mailing list, archive and NNTP free of charge, but we
also have full access
shell accounts available to members (which costs about 27 AED/year).

The box was paid for by member donations and the hosting is sponsored by the
hosting company.
I'd be more than happy to contribute a decent chunk toward hosting a box
somewhere (I'm already
investigating that) and a domain..

Grand Idea.. I'm in and out all week, but next week sometime I'd be more than
happy to down a couple
of pints of heavy in the name of thrashing out a solution..

Perhaps, but if it goes away from the free services then someone will wind up
with some bandwidth
charges in the minimum.
I'm with Dan and have no problem chucking some sheckles toward the hosting
costs..
