I may have figured it out. It may be a bad hard drive. I got a hold
of the newest version of Ubuntu, and it got to the same point (EVMS)
and then died with an error message about bad I/O or some such. Two
Ubuntus couldn't install on the hard drive. Red Hat looked like it
was doing fine, and Windows XP got on there somehow (I didn't do it).
So, I swapped out the hard drive and Ubuntu went on just fine. So,
it's probably the hard drive.
