Hi Ashkay,

Most backup systems are push-based for efficiency.  One example of this is to compress, or encrypt backup data before sending across the network to the backup server.  You can't do this with a pull solution. 

A second example is where SAN-attached servers should backup data directly to the SAN-attached tape library.  Again, can't be done with a pull solution.

Something like AMANDA is pull-based, but extremely inefficient, especially if you have large data sets.

I have a few top-grade commercial alternatives to Veritas.  If you are interested, then best contact me off list.
