MultiSync seems to have become the de-facto sync method as it allows sync from prog1 to prog2 via a set of plugins.  This means you can sync your phone with mail/calendar, or just backup (certain) phone contents to file.

You can use the same tool to backup a whole lot of other stuff - check their website.

a bit off topic - especially if you want to use this with XP.

You'd do better to ask which mobile pda you can sync with your favourite
Linux distro and how.....

I'd like to ask that. I want to sync contact database and calendar. Is that too much to ask?

I have about 2.5k calendar events and about 4.5k contacts. I'd be using a treo but I've just had so
many bad experiences with the hardware.
