Got 'em already. This is the strange bit. The drive is behaving *exactly* like it's set to do idle immediate. This "feature" is switched off by manipulating the standby timer and power management settings. I've played with all of them and when it's actually misbehaving it will not actually do what the registers tell it to do. After a power cycle it's all apples again though. I'll keep playing. At this rate I'll need a new drive in 6 months anyway. :( Oh well, I can see a 160GB 7200RPM drive upgrade in my future.
