Hey Ben

Just taking a guess, but do you have two NIC's? (K)ubuntu is different from
Suse 10.1 and Win 2000 in so much as it runs Network Manager by default on
startup
- if you have two NIC's (wired and wireless for instance) it may choose to
activate the wrong one ...

IP 169.whatever is a default when dhcp adress isn't received from a server - if
you set the ip manualy does it work? Does ifconfig show only one NIC or two?

Ditto for Tod: send more info ...
