Edward,
Install 8.1 on the 2300c, don't even worry about speed. Because 8.1 has more
PowerPC native code, it'll run faster than 7.6. Also, if you have more than
32MB RAM, many suggest 8.6. I am running 8.6 on my 2300 with 56MB RAM and am
quite happy.
Also, the fastest modem for a duo was the GLobal Villagr 19.2 bps. Faster
than that and you'll need an external. Try to find one like the supra models
that draw power off of the ADB port instead of an external brick.
